Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Poor instincts, makes insufficient reads and decisions on the football field, is slow to react in man, bites on double moves, and will frequently put himself the wrong side of the play in run support. Adequate motor/effort, shows the will to get involved in both phases and chases down plays to the sidelines and EZ. Adequate toughness, will battle physically with blockers in the run game and receivers vs. pass, particularly at the catchpoint.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Average overall athletic ability, with limited COD, average explosiveness, and adequate speed, has the top speed to track receivers down field but will struggle against more agile/ quickness-based receivers. Limited hip fluidity, hips are a little tight in man coverage frequently losing strong contain at the break point. Limited backpedal and body control, is a little unbalanced as he transitions back-to-front and side-to-side. Average bend and flexibility, not a naturally fluid mover in space, but contorts his body well to compete at the catch point. Limited play strength, will get outmatched taking on blockers in the run game.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Average burst to close and plant to drive, once locked onto where he needs to go, can cover the initial ground fairly quickly, but is best and most comfortable once up to full speed in pursuit or covering a deep route. Limited capability to cover in press- or off-man coverage, instincts and feel in man coverage will be his biggest issue at the next level, can initially stick but loses receivers on COD routes way too often at the breakpoint. Poor ability to play zone coverage, looks a little lost playing zone, spacing is off, usually way too close to the sideline and he lacks the instincts to make effective reads to close on the ball in a timely manner. Above the line at the catch point and adequate ball skills, tracks and times the disruption very well with his adequate frame and arm length, without this he’d have conceded a good number more deep receptions. Limited run support, physically outmatched on the edge by WRs/TEs, doesn’t read the play well either putting himself on the wrong side of the blocker to influence/ make a play on the ballcarrier. Limited open field tackler, has a lively low shoot that when he makes contact looks spectacular, but whether he makes contact is a touch sporadic, often missing entirely, or failing to engage with an effective wrap.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Montaric Brown is a Redshirt Senior at Arkansas who has played in 42 career games. Four-star Corner, No.161 nationally in 2017, according to 247 Sports. Redshirted his first year on campus, before making 3 starts in 11 games in 2018. Full-time starter for the 2019 and 2020 seasons, while also featuring on various special teams units. Had his best season as a Redshirt Senior in 2021, being named First-team All-SEC after a campaign that involved 5 INTs and a team 9-4 record. Montaric Brown is a borderline roster/ practice squad corner prospect for NFL teams. His overall poor instincts will be a significant hurdle for him to overcome to warrant serious playing time, his best chance will likely be in a two-high man-heavy defensive scheme.
