Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Adequate length and height. Strong build with a solid base, arm strength is clearly displayed in his run blocking ability. Above the line durability, he has no long term injury issues during his 4 years of eligibility.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Adequate instincts, he has the ability to consistently find pockets of space in zone coverage and settle to make himself available for the ball. Also displays a good awareness of how to manipulate DBs, leaving into them before cutting in the opposite direction and also using quick foot speed and agility to escape contact. Effort/motor is above the line, he shows a willingness and drive to keep moving if a play brakes down, always looking to find space and make himself an option on scramble drills.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Explosiveness is average, he takes time to hit full speed and this typically won't challenge DBs deep. Takes time to close cushion is soft coverage and requires more on his feet movement and change of direction in order to gain separation. Shows above the line body control, he can keep himself stable and upright during contact. Uses vision and positioning well to high point catches. Change of direction is adequate, has an ability to decelerate on the spot quickly on high angle COD routes, such as curls/hooks. Digs and out routes could be run a little sharper, he has a tendency to curve these, making it easier for DBs to close him down and make a play.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Average release, he shows an ability to jump out of press well with his lateral agility, but struggles to close down cushions quickly enough in soft coverage. Ball skills are also average, mainly due to his inconsistently. He shows a good ability to track balls in the air, high point catches, but displayed a lack of concentration at times, dropping significantly easier targets. YAC ability is above the line, he shows a good understanding of where DBs are positioned behind him and can use this to turn into space consistently after taking the catch and gaining extra yards whenever the opportunity is presented. Whilst he is not used in the return game, his qualities could make him an asset on special teams as a returner. Perimeter blocking is average, he shows good physicality to stand defenders up and get into their chest, but does this without much technique or positioning and this might be an issue translating to the league as defenders might be able to shed him easier than in college.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Michael Woods II is a 3 star recruit out of Magnolia High School, Texas. He spent his first 3 years of eligibility at Arkansas before transferring to Oklahoma for the 2021 season. Played in a rotational role for the Sooners, playing in about 65% of the offensive snaps per game. Played in an Air Raid scheme under Lincoln Riley last year, a system which consistently helped him get into space and put up good numbers last season. Woods is a receiver without a refined or specified skillset. He shows an ability to get into space and take good catches, but he may struggle to translate this ability to the NFL because his stats don't suggest any elite attributes. He will perform well in offensive schemes aiming to get him into space, particularly in the short and intermediate passing game where he can utilise his COD ability and DB manipulation.
