Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Poor height and length at the linebacker position. Dense, even-cut build; compact upper body - thick chest/traps/arms with a modest taper down through his hips, closer to firm/solid than vascular/shredded overall. Has proven extremely durable over the course of his career with no game abscences to speak of in his time at Oklahoma State.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Clinical football player that possesses outstanding toughness/instincts; anticipatory with pre-snap keys/reads run & pass, identifies and attacks assignments with immediacy/urgency off the snap, seldom out of position and always looking to get involved/finish on the football with physicality.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Athletic maximizer - above the line body control, plays within himself & functions/operates with awareness of who he is as a body/mover on the field. Flexiblity & bend are limited overall - quality range through the groin marred by major external rotation in lower body alignment; upright & narrower mover despite deficient stature, top heavy/forward lean moving with direction, lower turnover strider with poor COD/redirect bending at the waist/striking with his heels. Linear/straight-line athlete with above the line explosive ability/speed on tape. Adequate play strength overall - muscle density and raw AA show in firm contact engagement on the field; wrestling background stands out at the juncture point - plays with upper body/hands in sync on contact, consistent wrap/drop-weight/corral tackler at the POA (length scalability is a serious concern as a tackler vs. NFL bodies).

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

A "coaches' favorite" as a prospect - possesses outstanding football character/accumen scrapping as a unique overachiever at the college level piloting a build that is at a consistent disadvantage. Extensive technical toolbag - high level understanding of body positioning, leverage, timing, points of contact, and defensive structure; always gives himself a chance to make the play in his sequencing snap to finish. Limited player in block protection vs. legitimate competition - compensates/competes vs. sloppier bodies at the college level pressing the issue with timing/physicality/decisiveness/activity. Closes the gap with haste in internal/free rush scenarios, high production true pursuit player with a natural feel for the game that allows him to stay at high RPMs tracking on the move. Awareness/understanding/urgency in coverage are there - movement skills to execute are limited; low range mover (width/transition) in undercoverage (poor recovery player if he bites on PAP), cross-face liability vs. twitch/finesse in man with major length deficiencies playing the football at the catch point.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Malcolm Rodriguez boasts one of the more decorated resumes in the country over the past 5 years at the position. With 50 starts, 408 career TOT, All-Big 12 accolades each of the past 3 years, and a team captain patch leading a top 5 ranked unit in the country, teams will be hard pressed to find a body of work that screams "football player" quite like Rodriguez. Regardless, undersized build and top end movement skillset limitations generate major scalability concerns with respect to starter ability at the NFL level. Must be protected in the box with mass or movement up front allowing for true see ball get ball opportunities; coverage reps should be limited in volume with a wall/leverage maintenance emphasis in mind. Projects as a core special teamer with a reliable depth/win-in-spite-of floor at Will LB in a 3-4 scheme.
