Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Adequate snap timing and anticipation, particularly against the run, fires off the snap and is quick to engage. Limited instincts post-snap, is slow to read the play often making poor judgement calls to burst through interior gaps or over-pursue to the outside in edge contain. Average toughness through contact and average motor/effort, played limited snaps for Alabama but still seemed to run out of gas as plays went on.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Average overall AA, with adequate explosiveness and twitch. Best with initial burst off the snap where he can utilize his twitch and explosiveness to get to the OLs outside shoulder. Limited overall bend and cornering ability, doesn’t have the natural bend to get around the edge. Average play strength and limited anchor at the POA, lacks the physicality to hold either inside vs. OGs or outside vs. OTs. Shows greater strength in his pass rush then run defence.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Adequate get-off vs. Pass on the interior of the defensive line, lively off the snap and uses his adequate hand speed to create some initial disruption. Poor pass rush moves, lacks any that will give him consistent success at the next level at this time. Limited UOH in the pass rush, has adequate hand speed but limited power, placement and timing that fails the majority of the time to create any disruption. Lacks a general refinement and co-ordination to his game. Limited rush angles and poor closing speed. Limited overall run defender. Limited at the POA vs. Zone and Gap, and Poor vs. DBLs due to limited anchor and limited heavy hands, will consistently be fitted in the run game and driven out of his gap both inside and outside. Limited play temperament, is way too hesitant in space frequently leaving him on his heels when facing a scrambling QB or RB and is subsequently unable to close and make plays on the ballcarrier.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
LaBryan Ray is a Redshirt Senior at Alabama who has featured in 44 career games. Five-star edge prospect coming out of high school, rated No.28 in the nation by 247Sports in 2017. Best performances came early in his career: a solid true freshman season followed by a career-best 7 TFL/ 3 Sack campaign in 2018. Suffered season-ending foot injury early in 2019, and was subsequently redshirted. Was limited again by injury in 2020 with only three stats in a mostly rotational role. 2021 was a similar story with just two starts, 1 TFL and 1 sack. LaBryan Ray projects as a roster-bubble 3-tech IDL prospect who has scope to fill in at strongside defensive end in certain heavy fronts. Will need to refine his pass rush technique and anchor at the POA vs. the Run to warrant extended playing time. Moreover, he’ll need to prove he can stay healthy and show hope he can return to his intriguing 2018 performance level.
