Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Hamilton possesses rare size for the position. He will be one of the largest safeties in the NFL once he's drafted. Outstanding length, his arms drop down to his knees plus some. Outstanding frame/durability. Only missed time at the end of the 2021 season due to a knee injury.

Possesses above the line toughness. Doesn't shy away from blockers or ball carriers and hits like a missile. Initiates contact when he has the chance to. Above the line instincts. Shows it on his INTs and his PBUs by anticipating throws. Outstanding effort/motor. Chases down nearly all plays, whether he's close to them or if the runner is 10+ yards away from him.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Hamilton is an above the line, plus some, overall athlete. Shows outstanding explosion and speed when he pursues plays and when he closes on ball carriers. Above the line body control, he did trip/slip a handful of times on film but most occurred on one tape (CIN). Fluid mover who doesn't waste much of his movements and shows above the line flexibility and bend when moving in coverage and when getting to ball carriers close to the LOS. Above the line play strength that is shown best when he shoots his hands on blockers. Shows the strength to easily move tight ends in the box. Above the line COD that is highlighted best when he's in pursuit and at times in coverage.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Hamilton shows adequate backpedal while he digests the play at the beginning of the snap. Sinks well but shuffles feet more than he steps while moving backwards. Above the line in run support and when close to the box and once he finds the ball carrier, he shows outstanding burst to close which stems from an outstanding plant and drive. This allows him to close on ball carriers at an impressive rate. Once he gets to the ball carrier, he rarely misses tackles. Above the line tackler with outstanding length, which gives him a wide tackle box and he shows adequate tackle form. Above the line hip fluidity shown in coverage, both man and zone. Despite adequate coverage ability, he excels in zone coverage as a FS or rover type player where he's allowed to read and react to the quarterbacks’ eyes. In man coverage he shows above the line twitch and suddenness to stay with all types of receivers in coverage but shows adequate ball skills because he loses the ball in the air at times. When he gets his hands on the ball, he shows sure hands.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Hamilton has started for Notre Dame over his last two seasons, compiling a total of 19 starts over 3 seasons. He was named a team captain for the 2021 season as a junior. He had his 2021 season cut short due to a knee injury but despite the injury made multiple mid and end of season awards lists that include Phil Steele's All American First Team and the Associated Press' All American Second Team. He played 233 snaps in the slot and 124 at free safety this past season. Hamilton's rare size combined with his borderline outstanding athletic ability will allow him to be a chess pieces for defensive coordinators at the next level. He projects as a plug and play impact starter at safety, either free or strong, and has all the tools to be top 10 at the position after his first season. His range and instincts allow him to cover the entire field sideline to sideline. He can play close to the line of scrimmage on early downs. His outstanding plant and drive and burst to close will allow him to make plays behind the LOS. Hamilton is an impact player at the next level. He grades out as a high, day one draft pick.
