Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Seltzner displays average toughness, allowing defenders to initiate the contact while showing little aggression to finish the defender. Showed limited instincts by consistently missing or being late to delayed rushers when in pass pro or being late to aggressive defenders in the run game while also showing limited effort by not looking for work in pass protection and being late to the second level on combo blocks

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Showed limited explosiveness when getting out of his stance and took time to get going when pulling or in the open field. Struggled changing direction often resulting in him whiffing on defenders in the open field. Would overreach too often and easily lose balance resulting in him constantly falling on the ground also was seen falling too often when getting bumped from the side while engaged with a defender. Showed average knee bend and flexibility, but when he was able to bend he coupled it well with his adequate play strength and leg drive to get movement when engaged with a defender.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Pass Block – When a defender targets the B gap Seltzner will often try to snatch the defender with his outside arm but due to his inconsistent hand placement he either will successfully get his hand on the defenders chest and pull him into his chest but more often than not he misses and the defender will get past him. Showed a solid but inconsistent anchor but due to the lack of his strong punch he too often would allow the defender to get into his chest and move him back. He also would be seen stopping his feet when in pass pro and allow defenders to get around him. Run Block – Struggled getting in phase with a defender when reach blocking and was seen consistently having to just throw his body in front of the defender. When matched head on with the defender he demonstrated an ability to move the defender and create a hole. When in space his inability to change direction quickly made it too easy for defenders to get around him. Pad level was also too high and would limit him from being able to get the proper push needed on duo blocks. Also showed little to no aggression when blocking and would rarely pancake defenders.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Seltzner will be leaving Wisconsin starting as a walk on and eventually starting 19/45 games for them. Started 4 games for them at RG in 2019. Then played the rest of his career at LG earning 1st Team All Big Ten and 3rd Team All American in 2021. Josh Seltzner is a late day 3 guard who comes from a pro style offense and will suit a gap running scheme that places an emphasis on power runs and duo blocks. He will struggle on heavy outside zone run teams that place an emphasis on blocking in space and reach blocking defenders. Should not be relied on to come in and contribute on day one. While he does have the frame that can add more strength and weight, he will need a lot of work on his feet and hand placement while also developing a good punch. Could eventually develop into an average starter but should be viewed more as a swing OG who will spend most of his career as a backup.
