Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Limited size, at 5104 and 179 lbs, he is clearly undersized for his position and could benefit from adding a few pounds in the offseason to help with his leverage and physicality. Adequate length, has long arms with a skinny frame. No notable injury concerns during his 4 years of eligibility

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Adequate toughness, DBs are often physical with him due to his lack of weight and height, but he shows good effort to fight through this and continue in his routes. Instincts are limited, he doesn't appear to react well when the ball is thrown to him quickly, often showing concentration lapses and inconsistent technique. Effort and motor is adequate, he looks to get into space and make himself available for the ball during scramble drills, but could do this with more consistency.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Explosiveness is above the line, he shows an ability to get to his top speed quickly from his release. Whilst on record, according to his 40, his speed is below average, he appears quicker on tape and in particular, he shows an ability to sustain his top speed on deep routes, which he is frequently assigned to run (fade, post, deep cross). His overall route running ability is average, where he doesn't appear to take sharp enough turns on COD routes to gain consistent separation from DBs. In addition to this, he shows a predictive trait on curl routes where he takes a large step forward before turning around to face the QB, which he will need to change if he wants to keep DBs from closing him down early. His play strength is also limited, shown particularly through his lack of ability to provide any assistance in the run blocking game. He also displays poor balance, frequently going to ground after taking catches or when attempting to block defenders.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Ball skills are limited, his tape is marred by inconsistency, where he shows flashes of good technique and an ability to be a possession receiver and couples this with concentration drops in key game situations. Concentration needs to improve at the higher level if he wants consistent snaps.Suddenness is adequate, he can square DBs up well in press coverage and use good lateral agility to evade Jam and burst into space. He also shows a good ability to disguise his routes (except from the aforementioned predictable trait on curl routes), where he quickly changes direction during his cut without indication. YAC ability is above the line, he has good agility and vision to spot gaps after taking catches to gain extra yards.Vertical threat is above the line due to his ability to sustain his top speed. Perimeter blocking needs improvement overall, he struggles with positioning, leverage, strength and effort.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Josh Johnson is a 3 star WR prospect out of Woodward Academy, Georgia. Johnson initially committed to play for the Iowa State cyclones, but after totalling one reception in his 2018 freshman season, he transferred to Tulsa where he would spend the next 3 years. Showed consistent progress at Tulsa before breaking out last year with his first 1000-yard season. Predominantly used on deep route due to his ability to sustain his top speed, which appears significantly faster on tape than his recorded 40 time. Struggles with sustaining concentration on every snap and this became evident in some fairly straightforward dropped catches or a lack of effort to make a play. In addition to improving his concentration, he could benefit from putting on a few pounds in order to be a rotational receiver in the league, as this will help with his physicality during his release and routes and in run blocking assignments.
