Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Above the line height and adequate weight. Average arm length with adequate hand size. Has thin arms that are limited in muscular definition. Long, slight chest and torso. Small thin legs, especially in the thighs. Overall limited upper and lower body size.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Average instincts, doesn’t seem to trust his eyes appearing tentative as he plants and initially drives, uses small but slowing gather steps that often result in him being late to the play. Average motor/effort, in general he displayed an adequate motor, but a few inexcusable snaps where he took the play off potentially cost his team; cite a sideline screen play in the Miami game where he could have prevented a TD had he read it soon enough and pursued with more intensity. Average toughness, not an overly physical player, but will show occasional moments of physical toughness in perimeter run support with effective low and aggressive tackles.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Adequate overall athletic ability with adequate explosiveness and speed, has the range to just about cover from single-high C1/C3. Adequate COD, balance, bend and flexibility, easily moves around the deep zones, can adjust his motion to pass-off or pick-up receivers in his area. Average play strength, has enough technique and power to capably take down ballcarriers in the openfield but will need to add strength to enable him to take on blockers more aggressively in the run game.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Above the line backpedal, gains quick depth straight-back or at an angle equally well. Adequate deep zone coverage, spaces and flows well in the defensive scheme, needs to ensure he stays disciplined in future as he has a tendency to drive to a receiver underneath rather than stay patient over the top. Average man coverage defender, predominantly a deep safety at Virginia in 2021 but has adequate hip fluidity and AA to line up occasionally in Off-Man. Above the line ball skills, natural playmaker with 10 career college INTs, will gamble and seek to undercut routes to make a play on the ball. Adequate plant and drive and burst to close, average instincts/ processing slow him a touch but once he’s located a target has adequate speed to get there. Average angles vs. Run, can frequently overshoot if the play cuts back inside as from full-speed forward momentum he has limited deceleration to come to balance. Limited run support, limited leverage and average play strength means he’ll have to keep clean to stay a factor in defending the run. Adequate open field tackling technique, has an effective low shoot and adequate wrap to bring down ball carriers/receivers.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Joey Blount is a fifth-year graduate at Virginia who has featured in 55 career games. Three-star S prospect, No.1866 in the nation according to 247 Sports. Appeared in all 13 games as a freshman, leading UVA with 15 special team tackles. Saw increased defensive playing time in 2018, making 5 starts with 2 INTs, before a further increased role in 2019 saw him make 11 starts and create 3 INTs. A lower-body injury kept him out of five games in 2020 and led to a stop/start season, but he remained the starter for 2021, where he played another 11 games recording 4 INTs. Joey Blount projects as a borderline, Deep/ Free safety starter in the NFL in either a single- or two-high defensive system. He has the above the line size and ball skills many will want from a gambling/ ball hawk type playmaker, but he’ll likely need to sharpen up his instincts and coverage discipline if he’s to earn a spot in a starting line-up.
