Build

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Eric Barriere never gives up on a play. Outstanding escapability.... Horizontal runner who doesn't get north-south quickly enough. Gets jittery and shortens motion when anticipating contact. Stacks bad plays

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Outstanding explosiveness, spins out of pressure extremely effectively. Above the line foot speed and COD, can juke a defender to the ground in open field.... Limited body control and play strength, struggles to throw off-platform and won't break tackles.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Quick feet. Extremely mobile behind the LOS, feels pressure well and can escape multiple times per play with spins and retreats. Quick trigger and very rapid release, gets the ball out quickly. Eric Barriere flashes outstanding arm strength to rocket the ball 60+ yards downfield when feet are set. ... Dead-legged in the pocket and will relocate seemingly at random. Deficient decision making, completely misses defenders and will regularly chuck the ball into double or triple coverage. Does not show the ability to put touch on the ball. Limited mechanics, severely mispoints toe and shows no weight transfer with an occasional kick. Limited accuracy, misses throws at all levels. Constantly throwing while falling or jumping, entirely sapping arm strength on the majority of throws. Plays like he's never heard of "live for the next down", sacrificing yards and chucking passes to avoid sacks. Extremely scattershot accuracy with limited arm strength on the run.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Sixth year who has started 29 of 51 career games for a 37 -14 career record, including starting all 13 in 2021 at 10-3. Eric Barriere was a three-star HS prospect as an athlete, redshirting in 2016. Played as the primary backup in 2017, taking over as the starter in midseason 2018 and never conceding the job. Three-year team captain. Named third team FCS All-America in 2019. In 2020, was named First Team All-American, finished second in voting for the Walter Payton Award, and won FCS OPOY and Big Sky OPOY. In 2021, named Second Team All-American. Under HC Aaron Best (fifth season) and OC/QBs Coach Ian Shoemaker (third season), Eric Barriere led a run-heavy offense that heavily emphasized Screen and movement passing, frequently caught in third-and-long. Developmental QB you can win despite as a scramble-first passer. Amazing athlete with a fearless streak and flashes of a cannon on his shoulders with a quick release. Fully boom-or-bust on the field, doesn't show the ability to consistently keep the offense ahead of the sticks. Lots of development to go mechanically but may never be accurate or show touch.
