Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Adequately built frame and could add weight to his upper body, mainly his shoulders. He has average to below average arm length to go with his small stature. Kendrick dealt with minor lingering injuries in 2019 and a team disciplined suspension in 2020. This caused him to leave school and he ended up transferring to Georgia from Clemson.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Derion Kendrick shows good break on the ball when going downhill but isn't extremely disciplined in his route recognition. Can lose his coverage as eyes wander. Tackles heavy with no hesitate in his approach to the ball carrier. Better in zone coverage than in man.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Above average athlete in all categories with quick and explosive feet with speed to stay in lock step on deep routes and burst to close on the football. Kendrick is an outstandingly fluid mover with strong COD skills as he is able to bend in and out of his cuts and remain low to flip his hips and proceed on the route. This allows him to make up ground on double moves, be patient at the stem of the route and react. Flashes play strength in the run game and in press coverage but can be out bodied at the catch point by larger receivers as he isn't able to create body positioning.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Very raw in his technique but flashes ability to do so at a high level due to athleticism. Shows fluid hip movement in man coverage but often bails too quickly and relies on reaction skills over technique. Willing and functional tackler but could add weight as well of a more nuanced approach to the ball carrier to eliminate missed tackles (two quite more missed tackles against Alabama in SEC Championship game). Back pedal is fluid but inconsistent as he ditches technique and works with raw ability often. Flashes great ball skills in recovery to make a play on the pass while trailing. Needs more consistency instead of just flashing.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Derion Kendrick spent time as a starter for two years at Clemson before moving on to Georgia after disciplinary actions with the Tigers. He has had 9 pass deflections and 7 INTs in 3 seasons bringing 2 back for TDs. Kendrick is a raw athlete with a multitude of above average traits and outstanding COD. He shows quick feet and long speed to stay in lock step with pass catchers down the field and the explosiveness to burst and close on routes. His best reps have come when he is sitting in zone coverage and is asked to react downhill instead of be sticky with a receiver in phase, in and out of his breaks. Often Kendrick relies too much on pure talent and ditches his technique which has worked against lower competition in college but led to his struggles against top tier CFB WRs. Derion Kendrick could contribute early on in his career using his athleticism, but could struggle if his technique isn't improved. For a team that needs him to play early, he could play in the slot while he learns out wide. Can play in press coverage but should play better with everything in front of him.
