Build

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Above the line instincts and feel in deep zone coverage, has a lovely natural spacing and flow to his game, understands his role in the defense and how to put himself in the best position for the unit to be successful. Adequate motor/effort, engages with drive and aggression to surrounding events but doesn’t hustle to every ball, usually the ones to the flats when in MOF responsibility. Adequate toughness through contact, can make open field tackles in the flat, but doesn’t relish action between the tackles.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Adequate overall athletic ability, with adequate explosiveness, speed and COD. Adequate hip fluidity, transitions well at deep free safety and at the breakpoint when playing off-man coverage, but will likely be stretched too far if he has to drop down and play corner with a jam and trail technique too consistently. Above the line lateral agility, balance, bend and flexibility, flows beautifully in deep coverage, is on-balance and athletically poised. Average play strength, plays hard to make plays along the sideline and in driving to the flats when over the slot, but will be overwhelmed by 2nd level OL and physical TEs.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Adequate backpedal, burst to close and plant to drive, bursts to make plays in robber coverage, to the flats, or to the sideline from MOF. Adequate capability to initially cover the slot in off coverage, won’t use physicality to disrupt receivers but has the athletic and instinctual coverage ability to match/ mirror and cover downfield. Above the line MOF Zone Coverage ability, has above the line schematic feel for his role in the defense, and adequate in-zone feel for defenders around him, could capably play C1 or C3 MOF Free Safety. Average run support, adequate motor/effort keeps him active, but has only average play strength and average run support angles where he often overshoots; likely won’t be able to hold up between the tackles or as a 7th run defender in sub packages. Adequate ball skills with above the line ball tracking, has the instincts to make plenty of plays both in man and zone, but limited length and size will be a performance barrier he needs to overcome.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Delarrin Turner-Yell is a Senior at Oklahoma who has featured in 40 career games. Three-star S prospect, No.894 in the nation in 2018 according to 247 Sports. Suffered a knee injury early in his true freshman campaign, but returned to finish the year and feature in 7 of the last 8 games. Started in all 13 games in 2019 and in 8 in the COVID shortened 2020 season. Had a career-best year as a Senior in 2021, where he was nominated All-Big 12 Second Team and recorded 3 INTs, all despite missing three games with a hamstring injury. Delarrin Turner-Yell projects as an adequate-starting Free Safety in the NFL; he could play in either single- or two-high defensive systems, but would be best utilized at Free/Weakside safety away from the LOS where his above the line zone coverage instincts and average run support abilities are at peak balance.
