Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Hill shows outstanding explosion as he plays. Pairs with his above the line speed to give him a combination that allows him to cover ground in a short period of time. Adequate body control and sometimes stumbles when changing direction. Above the line change of direction and can switch his pursuit routes with relative ease. Adequate flexibility/bend moves high in his backpedal and when in coverage. Limited play strength that leaves more to be desired.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

After he processes and diagnoses a play, Hill shows adequate plant and drive when he starts his initial pursuit towards the play. Takes him multiple steps to get his momentum going. He shows above the line twitch/suddenness to change his angles of pursuit and when he's changing directions in coverage. Above the line burst to close when he comes within range of the ball carrier and closes ground quickly. Average tackler and block shedder which hurts his ability to finish plays and play close to the LOS in run support. Possesses and adequate backpedal that would be above the line if he learns to sink his hips more. Has above the line coverage ability in both man and zone coverage. Struggles against receivers who are twitchy and quick in & out of their routes. Above the line ball skills when he gets to receivers prior to the football. Uses his hands well to disrupt receivers at the catch point.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Daxton Hill is a former 5-star and top safety from the 2018 recruiting class. He's the brother of current NFL running back Justice Hill. Hill started 23 games during his collegiate career and during his 2021 junior season he earned an All BIG-10 nomination. He played 533 snaps in the slot this past season and projects there at the next level. Hill projects as a starting caliber nickel package safety and as a winning backup at free safety with the potential to develop into an impact caliber starter at free safety or in the slot. Hill has all the athletic traits needed to play free safety at the next level. He needs to add muscle to his frame to help with his block shedding and tackling ability. His experience in both man and zone coverage from the slot will be valuable as he lined up against multiple NFL caliber TEs and WRs while at Michigan and held his own against them. Middle to late day 2 pick.
