Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Average height and weight. Thick arms of poor length with limited hand size. Bulky, filled frame with wide shoulders. Above the line butt and thighs. Missed final five games in 2018 with a torn left ACL. Missed 2020 spring season with a foot injury.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Shows some hot-and-cold streaks, puts together outstanding drives yet also stacks bad plays. Outstanding toughness, willing to step into hits in the pocket and will sacrifice body to pick up necessary yards, but smart enough to slide when appropriate. High motor, competes through blowouts and is a clear team leader.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Won't wow anybody with physical attributes, using suddenness and technique to avoid pass rushers. Average explosiveness with limited speed, won't outrun or outmaneuver NFL defenders. Inconsistent body control, with flashes of tight movements in the pocket yet wide, unrefined throwing motion. Doesn't change direction cleanly, only able to make small adjustments. Won't break any tackles but can attack upfield shoulder and fall forward when necessary.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Comfortable standing in the pocket, shows above the line decision making to progress through up to four reads. Looks off the safety well. Knows his matchups and ruthlessly attacks weak defenders. Operates on time and flashes anticipation to attack holes in the coverage. Quick release. Flashes touch to lead receivers. Outstanding feel in the pocket, uses processing and body control to sidestep or duck under pass rushers and break contain. Above the line processing outside the pocket, finds the open receiver and flashes body control to throw on the run or pulls it in and takes his yards before sliding. .... Can get overly complacent taking checkdowns without testing his arm. Poor mechanics, sidearm release that excessively bends at knee and overstrides, preventing efficient weight transfer or torque. Average accuracy, forces receiver adjustment or misses throws entirely. Limited arm strength, failing to show velocity and lacking power to attack deep without touch. On the move, accuracy suffers.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
RS Senior who has started 40 of 40 career games at 23-17, including 11 of 11 in 2021 at 6-5. No-star HS recruit who started every healthy game from the moment he stepped on campus, named CAA OROY in 2017 and was a finalist for National Freshman of the Year. Missed the final five games of the 2018 season and the entire spring 2020 season due to a torn left ACL and a foot injury, respectively Responded in 2021 with Second Team All-CAA. Under HC Tony Trisciani (third season) and OC/QBs Coach Drew Folmar (fifth season), Davis Cheek led a timing-based spread offense with Air Raid principles including frequent empty backfields with Mesh concepts. Backup QB you can win with as a distributor in a quick timing-based system. Smart passer who can make the right decisions and protect the ball, flashing touch to compensate for lesser arm strength and pocket feel for lesser athleticism. Has a low ceiling with both accuracy and mechanical concerns. If he sticks through a preseason, could be a valuable long-term backup.
