Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Above the line size with thick build. Wide shoulders with proportional arms of average length and full frame. Limited hand size. Adequate thighs and wears a bulky brace on right knee. Right knee injury in HS required eight biodegradable nails inserted arthroscopically & missed senior season. Had discomfort in right knee in 2020, leading to second surgery after season where piece of hip bone was inserted in knee. Returned for 2021 season but dealt with knee inflammation throughout season and was clearly hindered. In 2021, tore scar tissue in right knee but returned to finish game. After consulting with NFL team doctor, opted out of 2021 bowl game.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Responsible for multiple checks pre-snap. Above the line awareness of pass rush while keeping eyes downfield. Fights to make plays, even while in the grasp of a DL, and competes every down. Wisely avoids contact on rare runs downfield… Particularly affected by pressure, skipping or missing reads and abandoning lower-body/core in motion. Gets rattled by consistent pressure, abandoning pocket early and running into sacks.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Above the line balance and shows outstanding play strength throughout body to stay standing through sack attempts. … Poor flexibility, noticeably hampered by injured knee. Limited COD and explosiveness with poor foot speed, not at all a threat on the ground.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Makes full-field top-down reads and can snap through three to four reads in his progression. Extremely willing to take deep shots. Adequate maneuverability in the pocket, seems to surprise defenders with sudden climbs or slides to relocate or escape using feel in the pocket. Flashes ability to torque his body and step into throws to reach elite arm strength, but can hit every throw without even fully engaging lower body properly. Consistently throws receivers open on Out/Go routes with power and above the line anticipation. Will test tight windows over the middle and make difficult throws. Adequate accuracy, protects receivers and can create YAC when using full throwing motion. Won't be known for throwing on run, but can make basic throws when rolling to right using arm talent.... Slow feet in drop, shows no rebound at top. Limited mechanically, frequently letting feet die in pocket and throwing with only upper body. With overly-favorable pre-snap matchup, will ignore coverage and simply throw ball up. Slow to wind up. When inaccurate, tends to miss high on passes due to failure to properly use touch, particularly struggling on extremely short throws. Lacks body control to throw across body.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Redshirt junior who has started 31 of 32 career games, including 12 of 12 in 2021 and a 21-11 career record. Missed senior year of HS due to injury but was still three-star recruit. Redshirted his freshman season and took over as starter to start the 2019 season. Earned 2020 and 2021 MWC OPOY. Under HC Ken Wilson (fifth year) and OC/QBs Coach Matt Mumme (fifth year), player led nation's 17th-ranked scoring offense and 6th-best pass offense (with 8th-highest completion percentage, sixth-most pass TDs per game, and 37th-highest EPA/pass play). The offense uses a pass- and shotgun-heavy West Coast scheme that spreads the field and primarily attacks outside the numbers with Outs, Gos, and WR Screens. Starter you can win with independent of scheme given pass-protecting IOL and WRs that can threaten deep. Tall, thick boom-or-bust QB with phenomenal arm strength to create windows on the outside or thread the needle up the seam. Team leader with feel to move in the pocket. Significantly hindered by knee injury and needs medical eval, with little mobility and no run threat regardless. Struggles when pressured and needs a lot of work on keeping consistent mechanics and speeding up motion.
