Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Adequate instincts, best displayed in space when he can read/react to defenders in pursuit. Average motor/effort, legs lack energy on contact. Limited toughness, is a space playmaker and will avoid contact where possible and duck to the ground or sideline where explainable.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Adequate overall athletic ability, with average explosiveness and above the line speed, doesn’t have high-end burst, his speed builds as his run/route goes on. Limited COD and limited deceleration, takes multiple steps to gather himself before he’s able to change direction with any significant burst. Adequate body control and bend/flexibility, highlighted best in his route running/adjust to catch, as a runner can bend his body a little but his balance is compromised the more he tries to contort his body. Limited play strength, limited in size and toughness, will struggle to win physical contests.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Adequate ball security, 1 fumble across his college career. Limited path discipline, not a full-time running back so still a little green in his understanding and usage of paths, will bend off and on the path depending on how the front is engaging rather than play design. Average inside run performance, has a slender frame and adequate instincts to feel his way through light fronts, played wildcat at Hawaii so has more diverse experience, lacks the strength and toughness to make gains once contacted. Average outside run ability, has above the line play speed but only average toughness, can get to the edge of long-developing runs such as toss, pitch but will struggle more with runs such as stretch and power. Average finisher in the open field and MYM ability, once at top speed that will be his biggest threat, won’t pose a threat with power/trucking moves and lacks the deceleration to perform agile moves to make competent defenders miss. Outstanding receiving ability, hybrid RB/WR at a Hawaii, seasoned route runner from Z and Slot; best running full speed routes from the slot on crossers, deep crossers, gos, speed outs, while mixing in some jet sweep options, but not effective in COD routes such as hitches as only has limited COD. Out of the backfield, is an outstanding weapon on traditional RB routes such as angles/ options/ swings. Has outstanding hands for an RB prospect, outstanding adjust high and low to the ball, average when the ball is located behind. Limited Pass Pro, inexperienced in the discipline with only 6 Pass Pro snaps across 2021, has above the line slide and movement to initially pickup and average UOH to repel but will struggle with raw power and balance issues once a defender gets into him.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Calvin Turner is a fifth-year graduate transfer from Hawaii who has featured in 22 career D1 games. Unheralded dual-threat QB prospect coming out of HS in 2017, caught on initially at Jacksonville University in Florida, playing quarterback and defensive back. Made the move to an all-purpose back in 2019, earning all-conference recognition after running for 1,380 yards and 15 TDs at 5.7 YPC. Transferred to the University of Hawaii for 2020, and played a wide-ranging role including RB, WR, Wildcat QB, and Punt/Kick Returner. Was named second-team all-conference at WR his first year following a campaign which included 66 carries for 373 yards and 34 receptions for 552 yards. Produced again in this diverse role in 2021, with 331 yards off 72 carries and 895 yards off 76 receptions. Calvin Turner brings one of the most varied and diverse skillsets of any player in this draft. He doesn’t fit neatly into any one box so will be viewed by the NFL as an offensive weapon in the ilk of Tavon Austin, Cordarrelle Patterson and Deebo Samuel. He projects best to a system where he can do a bit of everything: wildcat, slot WR, gadget player, and of course, running back on 12 or under carries a game.
