Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Above the line height and size with prototypical length to be a true Y tight end in the NFL. Has struggled with injuries and must stay healthy to prove to be a reliable starter. Underwent surgery to repair an ankle injury which limited him to only 8 games in 2021. Currently "uncertain" on whether he will participate at his pro day.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Adequate toughness as he engages with his blocking assignment, but is unable to sustain blocks on above-average defensive lineman. However, he understands his blocking assignments very well, knows when to work to the second level and which LB to block. Hard worker with a consistent second effort when required. High motor, especially on blocks he doesn't give up and blocks whoever he can to the whistle. Tough after the catch, doesn't go down easily.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Displays above the line explosiveness when coming out of his stance to block. Adequate speed, understands when he needs to slow down or go faster in his routes, based off the coverage. Above the line body control with his ability to direct where he wants to control the defender. Shows adequate bend and flexibility in his blocking as well as his routes - sometimes looks stiff when running zigs or curls. Average play strength - although he displays much effort and a high motor, he must bolster his play strength and aggression levels if he wants to become a solid blocker at the next level against premier defensive lineman and edge rushers.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Smart, instinctive route runner as he gets open by reading the coverage and changing speeds mid-route to get separation. Sometimes stiff in his route running. Many of his routes consist of curls, outs, and digs. Above the line release - doesn't get jammed off the line of scrimmage and on play-action plays, he fakes. blocking and leaks out to get open. Good, reliable hands. Not many instances in which he had to reach out to get the ball - either the ball was on his chest or it was nowhere near him. More of a possession tight end - can rely on him to get to the sticks and catch the ball. After the catch he is above the line as he has a toughness to him to get as many yards as he can while using his vision to reading his blocks and seeing the open holes. Outstanding technique in the running game. Shows bend in his blocks, keeps his hips skinned, and continues moving his feet to open up a hole for the running back. Won't have to teach him run blocking at the next level, displays proper technique and effort in sealing off blocks. Understands blocking assignments such as going to the next level and blocking the linebacker. He must get better play strength and aggression to make a difference at the next level. Would like to see him be more violent in his blocking. Overall, very reliable player who will get the job done.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
A four-year starter who played in 31 games finishing with 91 rec, 1,026 yards, and 9 TDs. Former three-star recruit. All-Pac-12 First Team in 2020. Overall, Otton has the size and capability of being a very reliable pass catcher for a QB for many years. He has been taught well at Washington - as displayed by his technique in run blocking and ability to get open against zone coverages. True run blocking ability and does just enough in the passing game to earn playing time. Won't be a matchup nightmare, but in a play-action scheme, he could prove to be extremely useful. Will need to work on his play strength and aggression if he wants to be a solid starter. Will be solid value in the 4th or 5th round.
