Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Has adequate height and weight, with adequate length. Has a lean build that looks like he can add some more mass, with adequate broad shoulders, defined arms, and a thin lower body. He has no significant injuries so far in his career, however he is already 23 years old due to redshirting his first season.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

He plays with an adequate motor, showing consistent effort and toughness. His adequate motor was evident on his pass rush reps vs doubles and chips vs Indiana. Does not diagnose run vs pass quickly, and looks hesitant at times, which was evident at times against Ohio State on misdirection runs and read options. This also limits his get off ability.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

An above the line twitchy athlete who shows outstanding straight line speed, explosiveness, and has above the line short area quickness, COD, and lateral agility. Has above the line flexibility, showing the ability to bend at the hips, knees, and ankles. Has adequate body control and balance, which is evident from him occasionally stumbling/losing his footing when trying to turn the corner on an OT. His limited play strength gets him into trouble in the run game due to his limited anchor which was evident in a bunch of games, most notably against the Ohio State OTs.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

He has an adequate skill set as a pass rusher due to an adequate pass rush plan and average hand usage. His ability to combine his above the line AA and solid hand usage allows him to win as a speed rusher and offers upside. He flashed his outstanding closing speed when he was able to disengage OL against Indiana and Ohio State. He is going to need to develop more as a run stuffer due to his limited play strength and limited instincts. Mafe tends to get controlled easily at POA and can get washed down on down blocks and doubles. He does not use his above the line bend consistently enough, getting out leveraged by OL and does not have the play strength to overcome it. He is going to need time to develop as a power rusher due to his limited play strength.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Boye Mafe is a RS SR from the University of Minnesota who has played in 42 career games. In HS, he was a former 3 star prospect and lettered in track and field. He saw improvement each season, and received All-Big Ten honors in 2020 and 2021. He had a strong week at the Senior Bowl and won National Team Defensive Player of the Game. Mafe has big upside due to his AA, but needs to improve his instincts and his play strength in order to reach his potential. Mafe fits best as a 3-4 OLB. Mafe is going to be an above the line special teams contributor early in his career, and projects as a situational pass rusher, with three down starting potential if he becomes more instinctive and gets stronger.
