Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Alontae Taylor has above the line size. High cut player with a slender lower body. Arms have adequate length, dropping down right above his knees. Above the line frame/durability. Only to note injury was a foot injury he played through the last couple of weeks of the 2021 season.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Shows above the line toughness, played through foot injury the last couple games of this past season. Plays with a swagger to his game and is fiesty. Adequate instincts and effort/motor combination. Doesn't always play full speed to the football if on the opposite field but this wasn't prevalent every play.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Overall is an adequate athlete with deficiencies in some aspects of his athleticism. Limited flexibility/bend. Shows stiffness throughout his body. Average change of direction, struggles with this in shorter areas. Adequate speed and explosion, flashed above the line speed at times (AT Alabama) but not consistently enough throughout the rest of his film. Adequate body control and flashed fluidity while moving. Adequate play strength but has the muscle and length to improve this at the next level.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Prior to the snap Alontae Taylor shows a stance that is more bent than sunk. Post snap he shows an average backpedal due to stiffness throughout his body and heavy feet. Shows an above the line plant and drive after he deciphers the play and an adequate burst to close when he gets closer to the ball. Average in run support. He struggles getting off blocks but flashes adequate/above the line ability to do so because of his length. Adequate tackler at all level of the field. Has adequate coverage ability. Average in man coverage but above the line in zone coverage. Limited twitch/suddenness which makes him struggle staying with receivers at the break point of their routes. Has adequate hip fluidity when changing direction or flipping himself to stay with a receiver in coverage. Has adequate ball skills that also have room to grow because of his exceptional length and ability to come downhill because of his above the line plant and drive.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Alontae Taylor projects as an immediate average to low starting caliber cover 3 or tampa 2 outside cornerback at the next level. Strictly an outside CB due to average twitch/suddenness and change of direction ability. He's a true senior and has plenty of experience as a starter with 31 starts at Tennessee, having starts dating back to his freshman year. He's a tough and feisty competitor who plays physically and has a high competitive motor. His above the line plant and drive paired with his size and length allow him to get his arms in passing lanes and come downhill to make plays on the ball or ball carriers. Adequate tackler who makes tackes in the open field on short passes. He will be a liability in man coverage against speed and precise route runners but should survive limited playing time if asked to play man. Late day 2, early day 3 pick.
