Titans Hire 49ers Executive Ran Carthon As General Manager

The Titans are hiring 49ers director of pro personnel Ran Carthon as their new general manager, ESPN reported.

The Titans fired general manager Jon Robinson on Dec. 6 after seven seasons at the helm, partly due to the team's failure to meet expectations in 2022. Tennessee finished 7-10 in an extremely winnable AFC South division that many prognosticators figured the Titans would win easily.

Carthon, meanwhile, has been in his role with the San Francisco 49ers since 2017. Before that, he spent five years in the Los Angeles Rams' front office and four years as a scout with the Atlanta Falcons. Carthon also spent time in the NFL as a player. After going undrafted in 2004, Carthon spent the next three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before finishing his career with the Lions.

Carthon's hiring secures a compensatory third-round pick in each of the next two drafts for San Francisco, which has seen a run on its coaching and executive staffs in the past two years. In November 2020 the NFL announced it would award two third-round selections to any team that had a minority coach or executive hired as a head coach or general manager by another NFL team.

The 49ers received similar compensation after the Jets hired Robert Saleh as coach two years ago, the Dolphins hired Mike McDaniel as coach last year, and the Commanders hired Martin Mayhew as their general manager two years ago.
