Dolphins Sign Veteran Pass Rusher Trey Flowers

The Miami Dolphins have reached agreement on a one-year deal with veteran pass rusher Trey Flowers following a workout with the team last week.

Flowers, who spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions, was released in the offseason after finishing last year on injured reserve.

The signing comes in the wake of the continued absence of Andrew Van Ginkel, a fifth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2019. Second-year pro Jaelen Phillips and veteran Melvin Ingram figure to be the featured edge rushers for this Dolphins defensive unit.

The 33rd Team’s head of scouting, TJ McCreight, has questions about what Flowers still has to offer.

“He will not be a fit for every team," McCreight said. "I did see a drop in his play, and the injury bug may have caught up to him."

Ranked as our No. 6 overall defense heading into the 2022 season, the Dolphins have high expectations on that side of the ball. With 2018 second-team all-pro Byron Jones and 2020 first-team all-pro Xavien Howard already established in the secondary, solid production out of the front seven could put Miami in a position to compete for its first division title since 2016.
