Deebo Samuel Inks Massive Extension with 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Deebo Samuel agreed to a three-year contract extension worth up to $73.5M Sunday evening.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Samuel's extension gives the star receiver $58.1 million in guaranteed money. Deebo Samuel is now the seventh wide receiver to sign a contract averaging $24M or more this offseason, joining DK Metcalf, Cooper Kupp, A.J. Brown, Davante Adams, Terry McLaurin, and Tyreek Hill.

In 2021, the 26-year-old do-it-all weapon had 87 catches for 1,559 yards and seven touchdowns. The playmaker was also a force as a rusher, rushing 86 times for 502 yards and nine touchdowns.

Deebo Samuel's offseason has had twists and turns, with OTA holdouts and even a trade request. However, the relationship between the two sides was slowly mended, culminating in his massive new contract extension. New quarterback Trey Lance will have a reliable key weapon to throw to and the 49ers keep their do-it-all playmaker for the foreseeable future.

The contract itself is an interesting one. "Deebo took the most aggressive approach to his negotiation of all the wide receivers", said Joe Banner, former NFL executive and Founder of The 33rd Team, "but the deal is just OK. He appears to have favored guaranteed money over yearly average, which isn't a good idea."

The deal came in a hair under DK Metcalf's deal with the Seattle Seahawks, but the two deals are similar. "Upon first look, Deebo Samuel's three-year extension looks very similar to DK Metcalf's", from Mike Tannenbaum, former NFL executive and Founder of The 33rd Team, "They are very different players, as Deebo has only averaged 15.6 yards per catch and only has 10 receiving touchdowns.

However, he has an additional 11 rushing touchdowns in his career, and is extremely valuable, both as a runner and receiver. I like the idea that it is only a three-year deal since he is just 26 years old. This sets up another extension for Samuel in the prime of his career in a couple of years. I would think this is another sign that the Jimmy Garoppolo days are over in San Francisco, period."
