2023 NFL Coaching Updates: Latest News, Rumors and Buzz

Wednesday, Feb 15

Rex Ryan Comeback a Possibility

Once one of the NFL's most well-known head coaches, Rex Ryan could be on his way to an NFL comeback. The coach, who was last on a sideline in 2016 with the Buffalo Bills, is among the final candidates for the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator job, NFL Media reported.

Ryan rose to prominence as a defensive coach with the Baltimore Ravens for a decade, parlaying that success into an eight-year head coaching career in the AFC East. His first six seasons came with the New York Jets, during which he led the team to the AFC Championship game in his first two seasons. After being fired in New York, Ryan was hired by the Buffalo Bills two weeks later, lasting two seasons there before being dismissed. Since his departure from Buffalo, Ryan has worked as an analyst for ESPN.

The Broncos' coordinator position became open when the team and former coach Ejiro Evero mutually parted ways after Evero was passed over in favor of Sean Payton for the team's head coaching job. Evero, a popular interview for head coaching jobs around the league this offseason, quickly joined the Carolina Panthers as their new defensive coordinator.

Buccaneers Make Seahawks QB Coach New OC

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hiring the Seattle Seahawks' quarterbacks coach, Dave Canales, to be their new offensive coordinator, per ESPN. Canales spent the last 13 years as an assistant under Pete Carroll, primarily as the wide receivers coach (2010-2017) and more recently as their QB coach and passing coordinator (2018-2022). He worked closely with Russell Wilson during some of his best years and helped Geno Smith win Comeback Player of the Year last season.

Canales faces a tall task in Tampa, however. Tom Brady finally decided to hang up his cleats, leaving Kyle Trask as the only quarterback on the Buccaneers' roster. Trask has only taken 10 career snaps, all coming in the regular season finale against the Atlanta Falcons. But he's still surrounded by a bevy of offensive weapons in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Cameron Brate, Leonard Fournette, Rachaad White, Cade Otton and Russell Gage.

Chiefs' Bieniemy to Interview With Washington

The Washington Commanders are searching for a new offensive coordinator to serve under coach Ron Rivera, and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will interview for the opportunity, NFL Media reported.

Bieniemy is fresh off a Super Bowl LVII victory, his second in five seasons as Kansas City's offensive coordinator. So why would Bieniemy want to leave Patrick Mahomes, Reid and the budding Chiefs' dynasty behind?

Likely, for the chance to prove he's capable of running a team. Bieniemy has been a consistent name that's come up in every hiring cycle in recent memory, thanks to the Chiefs' success. But his inability to find a head coaching job could be tied to the fact that teams feel Reid and Mahomes do most of the heavy lifting in Kansas City.

In Washington under Rivera, Bieniemy would likely have more autonomy and more of a chance to prove himself. The Commanders, who interviewed Greg Roman for the same position earlier this week, appear to be looking for an experienced mind to run their offense, and Bieniemy might just be the perfect fit.

Dolphins Make Fangio Hiring Official

The Miami Dolphins have officially named Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator, the team announced.

The move had been in the works for some time, but Fangio was serving in an advisory role to the Philadelphia Eagles during the past two weeks. With Super Bowl LVII done and the Eagles moving on to the 2023 NFL season, Fangio is ready to assume control of the Miami defense.

Panthers Hire Passing Game Coordinator

The Carolina Panthers are hiring former Indianapolis Colts play-caller Parks Frazier to be their new passing-game coordinator, NFL Media reported.

The Colts fired coach Frank Reich midway through the 2022 NFL season, as the Colts failed to meet expectations. Heading into 2023, Reich is the new coach for the Carolina Panthers. Frazier rejoins Reich's staff as Carolina looks to transition into a more stable and successful era.
