2023 NFL Coaching Updates: Latest News, Rumors and Buzz

Saturday, Feb. 4

Broncos, DC Evero Part Ways

After the team passed him over as an internal hire for their head coaching position, defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and the Denver Broncos have agreed to part ways, NFL Media reported.

Evero was one of the most popular candidates this hiring cycle, interviewing for all five open head coach positions around the league, including the Broncos'. However, Denver traded for former Saints head coach Sean Payton earlier this week, giving up a first- and second-round pick to bring him in and then signing him to a five-year contract. Shortly after news of the deal broke, Evero began receiving interest from other teams not just as a head coach, but to take over as defensive coordinator elsewhere.

Cardinals Interviewing Anarumo for Second Time

The Cardinals will interview Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo for their head coaching position for a second time. The interview will take place next week, per NFL Media.

Anarumo has never been a head coach before and his time with the Bengals was his first coordinator job since the early 1990s. But his innovative and diverse schemes on defense have made him a hot candidate during this cycle.

Cowboys Hire Brian Schottenheimer as OC

The Cowboys are hiring Brian Schottenheimer as their new offensive coordinator, per ESPN. Schottenheimer was a coaching analyst for the Cowboys this past season and is being promoted to replace the departed Kellen Moore, now the Chargers' offensive coordinator.

Schottenheimer previously served as the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars on Urban Meyer's staff in 2021. Before that, he was the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks from 2018-2020. He has been a football coach since the late 1990s, following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Marty.

Colts will interview Steichen

Eagles’ offensive coordinator Shane Steichen is interviewing today for the Indianapolis Colts’ head coaching job, ESPN reported.

The Colts might not name a head coach until later this week or even after the Super Bowl.
