Philadelphia Eagles Re-Sign CB James Bradberry for 3 Years, $38M
The Philadelphia Eagles and cornerback James Bradberry agreed to a contract on Tuesday, keeping the 2022 second-team All-Pro in Philadelphia, ESPN reported. The deal is for three years and $38 million. Another $6 million in incentives could bring the total to $44 million.
Bradberry was cut by the New York Giants before the start of the 2022 NFL season, then signed a one-year deal with the Eagles. The 29-year-old started all 20 games (including playoffs) for the Eagles. His three interceptions and 17 passes defended were one off his career highs.
Bradberry's strong season in Philadelphia finished on a sour note as he was flagged for a costly holding penalty late in Super Bowl LVII.
Bradberry was penalized for holding Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster in the red zone as the fourth quarter was drawing to a close. The penalty gave the Chiefs a new set of downs and a path to run down the clock. Harrison Butker kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds remaining to win the game.
Bradberry admitted after the game that he held Smith-Schuster, stating, "I pulled on his jersey. They called it. I was hoping they would let it ride."
Tuesday's agreement ensures Bradberry will remain with the Eagles with a chance to return to the Super Bowl and change the narrative.
Retaining Bradberry was crucial to an Eagles defense that lost defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, linebacker T.J. Edwards and safety Marcus Epps via free agency on Monday. The Eagles also might lose safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who led the league in interceptions and is an unrestricted free agent. In addition, the team gave fellow starting cornerback Darius Slay permission to seek a trade late last week.
