Jets Opening Cap Space for Possible Rodgers Move
With a possible acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the horizon, the New York Jets are clearing cap space. The team has restructured the contracts of Laken Tomlinson, Tyler Conklin and D.J. Reed, ESPN reported, clearing just over $15.2 million in cap room.
A resolution to the Rodgers situation is expected before the start of free agency on March 15. The Jets have already met with the Green Bay Packers quarterback, and both Rodgers and the Packers are working to find a trade.
The Jets are following several teams in restructuring deals prior to free agency opening. Several teams did so on Friday, and ESPN also reports that the Los Angeles Chargers cleared $26 million by restructuring edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, while fellow AFC West team the Las Vegas Raiders did the same with edge rusher Maxx Crosby, clearing $7.5 million.
Saints sign TE Johnson
The New Orleans Saints signed tight end Juwan Johnson to a two-year contract, the team announced.
NFL Media reported the deal to be valued at $12 million, including $8.5 million fully guaranteed. The maximum value would be $14.5 million.
The third-year pro had a breakout season in 2022 with 42 catches for 508 yards and seven touchdowns.
Teams reworking deals
- The Buffalo Bills and defensive tackle Tim Settle agreed to a renegotiated deal for 2023 that reduces his cap charge by about $600,000, ESPN reported.
- The Minnesota Vikings and guard Chris Reed renegotiated and dropped his cap charge by about $1 million.
