College Football: Week 12 Draft Stock Watch, Matchups and Notable Games

Top SEC Matchups

1) Arkansas WR Treylon Burks vs Alabama CB Josh Jobe

Arkansas WR Treylon Burks solidified his case as one the upcoming draft’s top prospects, parading his full array of skills against Alabama. Burks torched the Tide secondary for multiple explosive plays (8 catches, 179 yards, 7 1st downs, and 2 TDs), in contested catch situations, and as a catch and run threat. Burks in particular victimized pre-season draft favorite Alabama CB Josh Jobe for 2 receptions (on just 2 targets) for 99 yards and a TD. Jobe allowed another 50 yards receiving elsewhere in coverage, where he lacked awareness in phase on vertical routes. Jobe has the physical tools to match most routes, but struggles to get his head around and locate the ball.

2) Missouri OT Javon Foster vs Florida Edge Rushers

Missouri’s Javon Foster has helped himself with a solid 2021 season on the blind side. Foster was up and down in Missouri’s victory that put the final nail in Dan Mullen’s Florida coffin. He graded poorly in the run game (56.9 run block grade), but battled all night, leveraging his length to open a lane on several key plays. He was better in pass pro, turning in a 71.9 pass block grade (1 pressure, 1 sack allowed). The sack came on an initial win for Foster against speedy OLB Brenton Cox, where the Missouri QB held the ball too long. Across his other 34 pass sets, Foster provided more evidence of his NFL potential, flashing balance and foot quicks against a quality group of Florida pass rushers.

3) South Carolina Edge Kingsley Enagbare vs Auburn OT Brodarious Hamm

South Carolina’s Kingsley Enagbare was key in his team’s upset win over Auburn, lighting up the stat sheet for 6 total pressures, 1 QB hit, and 2 defensive stops. Three of those pressures came against Auburn OT Brodarious Hamm, who struggled with the SEC’s most productive rusher. Enagbare beat Hamm with a nice inside counter move on several reps when Hamm overset to protect the edge. Later, Enagbare also flashed a speed to power move to get Hamm off balance and retreating into his QB’s feet. Hamm missed the mark in a game where he needed a solid performance.

2022 NFL Draft Stock Up:

  1. Arkansas WR Treylon Burks: 8 rec – 179 yds – 2 TD – 2 contested catches – 7 1st downs
  2. Kentucky WR Wan’Dale Robinson: 8 rec – 181 yds – 113 YAC – 5 1st downs – 4 explosive plays
  3. South Carolina RB ZaQuandre White: 168 total yds – 6 forced missed tackles – 5 1st downs

2022 NFL Draft Stock Down:

  1. Alabama CB Josh Jobe: 39.2 covg grade – 4 rec allowed – 149 yds – 1 TD
  2. Auburn OT Brodarious Hamm: 41.9 pass block grade – 4 pressures allowed
  3. Florida OT Jean Delance: 53.6 PFF grade – 1 pressure allowed – 1 sack allowed

Top Pac 12 Matchups

1) Utah TE Brant Kuithe vs Oregon Secondary

Kuithe is an undersized TE (6-2, 230) but flashed potential as a pass catcher against Oregon. He consistently found the soft parts in Oregon’s zones and showed explosiveness after the catch, having 4 explosive plays and 3 forced missed tackles. He flashed as a route runner and showed good body control in and out of his routes. However, he did show inconsistent hands (2 drops). Kuithe also showed effort and willingness to block in the run game too despite his size.

2)UCLA DT Otito Ogbonnia vs USC Interior OL (Brett Neilon & Andrew Vorhees)

Ogbonnia collapsed the pocket from the interior on USC a number of times in this game. He showed promise as a pass rusher, utilizing his body control and strength to collapse or knock over USC offensive linemen a couple of times. In the run game, he understood how to use leverage to get to the football but was washed at times due to penetrating deep into the backfield. He struggled getting off blocks in both pass and run situations. He showed flashes against two experienced PAC 12 interior offensive linemen.

3) Oregon Edge Kayvon Thibodeaux vs Utah LT Bamidele Olaseni

Olaseni struggled staying with Thibodeaux in pass protection due to slow feet and late punch timing. Thibodeaux won off the edge by getting his hands on Olaseni early, using his leverage to knock him off balance, or by beating him with a quick first step. However, Olaseni had the upper hand in the run game. He was stronger than Thibodeaux, did a good job getting his hands on him first, and was able to seal him and on occasion drive him back. Thibodeaux struggled to regain leverage against the run.

2022 NFL Draft Stock Up:

  1. Washington State LB Jahad Woods: 12 TOT, 8 solo, 2 TFLs, 1 INT, 1 forced incompletion, 80.7 PFF
  2. Oregon State RB BJ Baylor: 20 carries, 150 yards, 5 MTF, 7 explosive plays, 73.8 PFF
  3. Utah TE Brant Kuithe: 5 rec, 118 yards, 3 missed tackles forced, 4 explosive plays, 2 drops, 82.4 PFF

2022 NFL Draft Stock Down:

  1. Washington OG Henry Bainivalu: 3 pressures allowed, 1 sack, 1 hurry, 1 hit, 53.4 PFF
  2. Arizona State QB Jayden Daniels: 16/27, 166 yards, 0 TDs, 10 carries, 46 yards, 1 INT, 1 TWP, 1 BTT, 58.1 PFF
  3. Stanford QB Tanner McKee: 26/43, 239 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 2 Turnover worthy plays, 1 big time throw, 63.4 PFF

Top Big 12 Matchups

1) Texas Tech OT T.J. Storment vs Oklahoma State Edge Brock Martin

Storment aligned at LT for TTU against OKST Edge Brock Martin. Storment was high in his stance and demonstrated a poor ability to kick and drive into position on vertical sets. In addition to his speed disadvantage, Martin allowed for the defender to run the edge and beat the OT on multiple snaps. Storment had difficulty mirroring Martin, which consistently won with the utilization of speed and bend/flexibility to get the corner on Martin. On the day ,Martin earned a PFF pass blocking grade of just 43.3. Whereas Martin earned a pass rushing grade of 73.9.

2) TCU OT Obinna Eze vs Kansas Edge Kyron Johnson

In 19 pass protection snaps, Eze typically aligned a 2 point stance, whereas Johnson was typically in a 4 point stance on the LOS head up or outside shoulder of Eze. Johnson, at 6-foot-1 and 223 pounds, is clearly undersized against the 6-foot-8, 334-pounder. Eze appeared to have the advantage coming out of the snap, demonstrated adequate quickness out of the snap and initially solid mirror and punch skills. As the plays progressed, Johnson utilized his leverage and quickness to consistently win against Eze on counter moves that crossed the face of the OT. Eze displayed his ability to anchor, but often let go of the block too soon, allowing for Johnson to make a play on the ball. Ultimately, Eze earned a PFF pass blocking grade of 89.4 whereas Johnson earned a 66.7 in pass rushing.

3) Iowa State OG Trevor Downing vs Oklahoma DL Isaiah Coe

In six pass blocking snaps, Downing lined up at LG while Coe typically aligned head up on the center or guard. Downing demonstrated the ability to adequately roll out of his stance with arms primed to fire against the impending pass rush. Coe lacked the fire off of the LOS and was often met by Downing, who maintained inside hand placement and typically controlled the direction of the block. Coe was able to exploit miscommunication on the part of Downing and the RT and split the two blockers en route to a QB pressure. Downing earned a PFF pass blocking grade of 79.8 and Coe a pass rush grade of 72.4.

2022 NFL Draft Stock Up:

  1. Iowa St TE Charlie Kolar: 12 rec 152 yards 12.7 avg 1 TD, 1 fumble. PFF receiving grade 71.0

Top Big 10 Matchups

1) Maryland OT Jaelyn Duncan vs Michigan Edge Rushers Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo

Duncan is a player that shows flashes of excellence, and he showed some of these flashes on Saturday against debatably the best pass rushing duo in the country. The key for Duncan is to become more consistent, because if he can do that he can become a very good player. Duncan was not perfect on Saturday, but the flashes were there. On the other side of the ball, Hutchinson did his thing. Hutchinson generated two pressures against Duncan, once with a vicious long arm, and another with his good change of direction. When not facing Duncan he generated one pressure and 3 TFLs. Ojabo, on the other hand, was very quiet when facing Duncan. He did not generate any pressures, and he only had one tackle while facing Duncan. When not facing Duncan, Ojabo generated three total pressures and one tackle.

2) Michigan State Edge Jacub Panasiuk vs Ohio State OT Dawand Jones

One of the big reasons for Michigan State’s success this year has been the improvement shown from Jacub Panasiuk. Unfortunately, Panasiuk had a very tough matchup versus Ohio State OT Dawand Jones. Jones is a mountain of a man and it takes quite a while to get around him. It is very tough to try and run through him due to his size, and that is what Panasiuk likes to try and do. Jones was able to completely neutralize Panasiuk all day and Panasiuk was truly not a factor for the first time all season. Jones did a great job of utilizing his length, while showing good punch timing and play strength. Jones definitely saw his stock increase this weekend.

3) Michigan State RB Kenneth Walker III vs Ohio State’s defense

Kenneth Walker III has been one of the best players in the country all season, and had legitimate Heisman hopes. Unfortunately, those hopes most likely came to an end after Saturday. Ohio State’s defense was able to suffocate Walker all day, and he only managed to obtain 25 rushing yards on the day. Yes, the game script did not call for many rushing plays due to the score, but Walker was ineffective when his number was called. Additionally, his marginal ability as a receiver and poor ability in pass protection limited him in this game altogether. In a game like this, it would have been nice to see him catch 4-plus balls and make something happen in the passing game, but this was not the case. He only caught one of two targets for four yards. There were no standout performances on Ohio State’s defense, but rather a strong collective performance, including Haskell Garrett, Tyreke Smith, and others.

2022 NFL Draft Stock Up:

  1. Ohio State WR Chris Olave: 7 targets, 7 receptions, 140 yards, 2 touchdowns, 82.8 PFF grade
  2. Ohio State WR Garrett Wilson: 9 targets, 7 receptions, 126 yards, 2 touchdowns
  3. Wisconsin TE Jake Ferguson: 8 targets, 8 catches, 92 yards, 92.3 PFF grade

2022 NFL Draft Stock Down:

  1. Michigan State RB Kenneth Walker III: 6 carries, 25 yards, 1 catch, 4 receiving yards
  2. Michigan State ED Jacub Panasiuk: 0 total pressures generated, 1 missed tackle, 0 tackles, 48.8 PFF grade
  3. Indiana OT Luke Haggard: 4 total pressures allowed, 49.9 pass blocking grade, 52.4 PFF grade

Top ACC Matchups

1) Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman vs Clemson Pass Rush

It’s tough to pinpoint just one or two players on Clemson’s defense in this game because seven players had at least a share of their seven sacks, and that doesn’t even consider the good coverage played by guys like Andrew Booth. Clemson’s defense has been hyped up all season as the best in the conference, and they sure played like it, making life extremely difficult for Sam Hartman and Wake Forest, racking up 7 sacks and 3 takeaways. Hartman was far from his very best, but still put in an overall solid performance, with PFF giving him an 80.9 Grade. This is definitely one for scouts to watch back again, as Hartman faced a lot of adversity and a very good defense.

2) Virginia Tech Edge Amare Barno vs Miami OT Zion Nelson

Zion Nelson had another strong day in pass protection as he didn’t allow any sacks, hits, or pressures and had a perfect pass blocking efficiency rating. With an 89.5 pass blocking grade against Virginia Tech, Nelson now stands at 84.7 for the season. Amare Barno had a relatively quiet night posting no sacks and recording a pressure on just 4.3% of his snaps. Barno now sits at just 2 sacks, 4 hits, 19 hurries, and 25 total pressures in 9 games played.

3) Florida State Edge Jermaine Johnson II vs Boston College OT Tyler Vrabel

In a matchup between two guys who will be playing in the NFL next year, Johnson definitely seemed to win the matchup, with 7 pressures, 4 hurries, 2 QB hits, and a sack. Vrabel just never really had an answer for Johnson pass rush, and it made life difficult on QB Phil Jurkovec, who was sacked 4 times and went just 4 of 14 when facing pressures for 45 yards and with 2 turnover worthy plays, including one that turned into an interception. This wasn’t all from Johnson, but his dominant pass rushing performance definitely played a big role.

2022 NFL Draft Stock Up:

  1. Louisville QB Malik Cunningham: 18/25, 303 passing yards, 11 carries, 224 rushing yards, 7 total TD, 94.4 PFF Grade
  2. Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong: 36/49, 487 passing yards, 3 TD, 1 INT, 90.3 PFF Grade
  3. Clemson OT Jordan McFadden: 1 pressure allowed, 333 team rushing yards, 81.7 PFF Grade

2022 NFL Draft Stock Down:

  1. Boston College OT Tyler Vrabel: 5 pressures allowed, 4 hurries allowed, 1 sack allowed, 47.6 PFF Grade
  2. NC State WR Emeka Emezie: 3 targets, 1 reception, 7 yards, 56.2 PFF Grade
  3. Boston College LB Isaiah Graham-Mobley: 4 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 missed tackle, 47.5 PFF Grade
