Insiders Network: Starting a Franchise With 1 Player

Starting a Franchise With 1 Player

The 33rd Team’s Insiders Network is a group of former NFL coaches and front-office executives who are here to provide insight and perspective into all things football. Each week during the season, we reach out to members of our Insiders Network to get their thoughts on a topical question. Here is this week’s question:

If you were starting a franchise next season and could build around one NFL player, who would it be and why?

Wade Phillips:

QB has been shown to the common denominator for winning in the NFL. Look at Brady, Manning, Mahomes, etc. Unless you are 85 Bears 2001 Ravens or 2015 Broncos! I think most would say Mahomes here, but Justin Hebert is one I like also.

Nick Polk:

Justin Herbert — he has all the tools to be a very special QB in this league for many years.

Joe Banner:

I'll take Mahomes. He is the best young player at most important position in the game. He has both the physical and mental skills to be a top guy for a long time.

Mike Tannenbaum:

Patrick Mahomes. In my eyes he is the best player at the most important position.

Marc Trestman:

This is the “master of obvious” answer. Justin Herbert checks all the boxes including accuracy, physical toughness, arm talent, and athleticism. He is humble, highly intelligent, and even-keeled regardless of the situation. He has it all and is a true example of the face of an organization.

We could in so many ways describing Patrick Mahomes here, but Justin Herbert is 3 years younger. In his second year playing at Pro Bowl level.
