Colts Proving Themselves As a Legitimate Contender in Aikman Efficiency Ratings

Colts Proving Themselves

The 33rd Team is proud to be home for the Aikman Efficiency Ratings — Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman’s proprietary formula for measuring team offense and team defense in the NFL.

As opposed to just looking at total yards gained and allowed, Aikman combined seven categories, placing more emphasis on some:

  • Points per game (20%)
  • Points Per Red-Zone Possession (20%)
  • Turnovers (20%)
  • Yards per Rush (10%)
  • Yards per Pass (10%)
  • Third-Down Percentage (10%)
  • First Downs (10%)

Don't look now, but the Indianapolis Colts are proving themselves as a legitimate contender. After a 41-15 shellacking of the Bills, in Buffalo nonetheless, the Colts are creeping toward the top 10 in both categories of the Aikman Efficiency Ratings, placing at No. 11 on offense and No. 12 on defense.

Despite their recent struggles, the Buffalo Bills remain on top of Troy Aikman's Efficiency Ratings with the No. 1 ranked offense and No. 1 ranked defense. They'll need to get it together on Thanksgiving night as they face off with a tough New Orleans Saints squad who places at No. 5 on defense and No. 15 on offense.

One other team who rank in the top 5 on both sides of the ball include the Arizona Cardinals (No. 2 on offense and No. 3 on defense) who recently earned the top spot in Paul Domowitch's NFL Power Rankings this week. With a balanced attack, the Cardinals have overcome a season-ending injury to J.J. Watt and a three-game absence from Kyler Murray to take control in the NFC.

Other teams in the top 10 on both sides of the ball include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 3 on offense and No. 8 on defense), Baltimore Ravens (No. 7 on offense and No. 6 on defense), Dallas Cowboys (No. 9 on both offense and defense), and Los Angeles Rams (No. 10 on both offense and defense).
