Marty Mornhinweg is a former NFL Head Coach and assistant with 34 years of football experience. He is best known for coaching quarterbacks and coordinating offenses for the Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles. During Mornhinweg’s NFL tenure, he won a Super Bowl and coached several All-Pro and Pro Bowl quarterbacks.
Mornhinweg began his football career playing quarterback at Oak Grove High School in San Jose, Calif., under quarterbacks coach Mike Holmgren, who would later hire Mornhinweg in the NFL. Mornhinweg earned a scholarship to the University of Montana, where he was a four-year starter. During his college playing career, Mornhinweg set 15 school records at quarterback.
It was also at Montana where he launched his coaching career in 1985, making several stops (UTEP, Northern Arizona, Southeast Missouri State, Missouri) before coming to the NFL in 1995. In addition to coaching, Mornhinweg also played in the earliest iteration of the Arena League before suffering an injury as the starting quarterback for the Denver Dynamite. He also served as a “camp arm” for the San Francisco 49ers under Bill Walsh, whose West Coast Offense Mornhinweg employed at various stops in the NFL.
In Green Bay, Mornhinweg reunited with Holmgren and became the quarterbacks coach for a young gunslinger from Southern Mississippi named Brett Favre. Under Mornhinweg, the Packers quarterback and offense developed into a power and won Super Bowl XXXI.
In addition to Holmgren, Mornhinweg has coached under Andy Reid, Steve Mariucci, Rex Ryan, John Harbaugh and Doug Pederson. He has worked with Hall of Fame QBs Favre and Steve Young as well as other standouts Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb, Mike Vick and Lamar Jackson.
After four seasons as San Francisco’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Mornhinweg spent two seasons as head coach of the Detroit Lions.
Mornhinweg grew up in San Jose, Calif., after being born in Oklahoma. He was voted 1979 Northern California Player of the Year as a senior and for his overall accomplishments at Oak Grove High School, Mornhinweg was inducted into the school’s sports Hall of Fame.
Mornhinweg resides in Montana with his wife, and they have four children. He is an avid poker player and still trains high school quarterbacks at his annual quarterbacks school. He is a frequent contributor to The 33rd Team.
